CES 2013: Samsung's new Plasma, LCD TVs to have powerful new CPUs

| by Nishtha Kanal | HDTVs

Samsung is the pioneer manufacturer of HDTVs and predictably has tried to sweep the CES 2013 with a strong display of plasma and LCD screens. The newest launches at CES include the flagship F7500 LED 3D TV, the F8500 series plasma, the F9500 OLED TV  while the LED line is represented by the F8000 and F7500.

The higher end models will all have impressive features like powerful A15 quad-core 1.35GHz CPU that is supposed to be around 3.6x faster than last year’s dual cores. The line-up will also come packed with features like the ability to decode HEVC video, two hand gestures, pinch to zoom, voice commands and gesture recognitions.

The OLED F9500 will be the first TV to feature Samsung Multi-View that will allow two people to watch completely different Full-HD content simultaneously on the same screen with corresponding audio and controls. The feature will be enabled by Samsung's special 3D glasses, which will come with personal speakers built in. The TV will have a significantly high contrast ratio that Samsung claims will add detail to colours.

Samsung is looking to continue its leadership in the LED Smart TV market with the release of F8000 and the F7500. The flagship F7500 will be available in 46, 55 and 60-inch, while the older sibling F8000 featuring a built-in camera and mic will be available in sizes up to 75 inches.

The F8500 will offer blacker blacks and whiter whites and will deliver the same brightness levels along with eight times the black expression of regular LED TVs thanks to new luminance enhancements coupled with Samsung's proprietary Deep Black Algorithm and Real Black Pro II for improved black expression. It will also be one of the first TV sets with native support for HVEC encoded content. It will be available in 51, 60 and 64-inch class screen sizes.

Each of these Flagship TVs will come with a Smart Evolution slot at the back of the TV that allows consumers to easily update the hardware and software on their TVs. Adding the Evolution Kit to their 2012 Smart TVs will show a redesigned Smart Hub, enhanced Voice Interaction and Motion Control as well as a quad-core chipset for increased processing power. Flagship 2013 Smart TVs will also be equipped with slots for future Smart Evolution kits.

The Samsung Smart Hub design too has received an update and is said to have become more intuitive. Content has been categorised into five sections that can all be navigated on one screen:

  • ‘On TV’ for Live TV
  • ‘Movies & TV Show’ for VOD contents
  • ‘Apps’ for various Applications
  • ‘Social’ for SNS contents sharing function
  • ‘Photos, Videos, & Music’ for personal content.

The ‘flip’ feature is what is getting most people talking. Using the Motion Control Function, one can flip through the content like flipping through a book.
