Sony Ships Standalone Blu-Ray Player

06 Dec, 2006, 3:42 pm IST | Jayesh Mansukhani | Blu-ray Players

Dailytech has reported, that Sony has finally released its standalone Blu-Ray player the BDP-S1. Initially supposed to be released on October 25, it was delayed due to the PS3 launch.

The BDP-S1 retailing at $999 in terms of resolution output supports 1080p through its HDMI connector. It also has support for MPEG2, MPEG4-AVC and VC1. In case the user does not own a 1080p capable television, the player can also output 1080i with the help of component cables. An interesting feature is the fact that the BDP-S1 also can upscale regular DVDs to 1080p with the help of the HDMI connector. Currently the BDP-S1 supports BD-ROM, AVC-HD and DVD playback on DVD/DVD+R/+RW media. The only thing missing is BD-R/RE media support, which will be available in 2007 with a firmware upgrade
