| eBay will now use Skype to allow buyers and sellers on the site to communicate with each other. A ‘Skype me' button will now feature on eBay's auction site which, when clicked on, will connect users through internet telephony as well as instant messaging. However, the service will be available only in the US, for high value products across 14 categories such as cars, cult collectibles such as vintage television show memorabilia, and complex technical gear. eBay says the new live interactive feature will enable buyers to get additional information straight from the seller and will help in making a better sale, especially in the high end category. Chief Executive Officer, Meg Whitman said, "The goal is to accelerate trade on eBay. Most are free Skype to Skype calls. We are not looking at this as a way to gain revenue from Skype calls." eBay has already integrated Internet telephone call features into its auction sites in Belgium, China, Switzerland, and the Netherlands and is planning to expand it further. It also announced that, beginning in July, it would start an eBay Alert service that would call people on their mobile telephones to let them know when they were outbid on an item. |
