Nokia Takes On Google With Online Mapping

14 May, 2008, 2:13 pm IST | Shayne Rana | Windows

Nokia is quite literally taking on the world with the latest addition to their online social website Ovi. At a conference in California, Nokia revealed an early version of their new Map software on Ovi.

Like Google Maps this online application allows users to adjust various angles onscreen and zoom in or out of the map itself. Nokia has used vector-based mapping so it’s going to be a bit faster than Google. The maps will also allow users to select various points of interest and directions to and from places. The directions will take into account pedestrian-only streets and alleys as well. The best part is that this application can easily be synced to your mobile handset and the routes etc. plotted or marked can be viewed. It can also store places of interest you may have marked on your handset.

The company is planning on publishing an API for developers to create various applications that will allow this software to interact with other software on the PC or mobile phone.
