Americans are spending nearly half of their leisure time online, according to a new survey. A survey by market research firm Media-Screen found broadband Internet users log on for an average of one hour and 40 minutes each weekday -- or 48 percent of their leisure time online. More than half of that time is spent accessing activities related to entertainment and communication like e-mail. "Sometimes people feel a little guilty about how long they spend online," said Josh Crandall, managing director of San Francisco-based Media-Screen. The survey was based on 4,000 broadband users aged 13 and above who were questioned in July last year. According to Nielsen//NetRatings, 119 million U.S. households had broadband access in April 2007, representing almost 82 percent of Internet home users. Crandall said sending e-mail was found to be the biggest draw, with nine out of 10 respondents in the "Netpop I Play"report listing this activity, followed closely by visits to Web sites at 81 percent. Playing games online was an attraction for more than half of those surveyed, while a third used the Internet for instant messaging. Using the Internet to listen to music, send text messages or tune in to radio were each listed by around a quarter of the respondents. Crandall said that more than half of respondents said their use of the Internet had increased over the last two years. "This is certainly more true for younger users," he said. |
