Gmail Now Supports IMAP

25 Oct, 2007, 4:00 pm IST | Jayesh Mansukhani | Windows

In a long awaited move, Google has finally enabled IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) support for its Gmail service. The introduction of this new service will make life easier for a lot of people, as IMAP offers a far better email experience than the traditional POP3 service.

With IMAP, all your mail is stored on the server and you merely use a client to access your mail. Due to this principle it’s quite easy to have one central storage and have multiple clients in the form of your PC/wireless device, accessing this one central store. It’s also possible to sync your calendar and other settings via IMAP. Another good thing is that IMAP, is a universally supported service and has been around for a long time. The final point of iMap is that it supports "push-mail" like functionality similar to a BlackBerry and is available for free.

Google is offering IMAP in a phased limited rollout. Currently only a few people have access to it. This will change as the rollout is made in larger numbers.

For further details on how to configure this service, head on over here.
