| Google has been pulling fast ones on April Fool's Day since 2000. This 1st April it reported that it had debuted a new beta service dubbed Google Romance complete with the usual tacky testimonials, a corny guided tour, an FAQ and even a press release. The USP of this dating service was of course contextual Google ads during the date. Those who did get suckered into trying to upload their profile saw this. Google's April Fools Day jokes have been innovative, witty and downright believable. In 2000, Google announced a new "MentalPlex" search technology that supposedly read the user's mind to determine what the user wanted to search for. This 'psychedelic' search required one to stare at a hypnotic image and think about their search. Clicking would thrown up hilarious error messages like "Brainwaves received in analog. Please re-think in digital. or "Searching on this topic is prohibited under international law." In 2002, Google revealed the technology behind its PageRank System - PigeonRank. The article made humorous references and puns based on computer terminology and how Google PageRank really works. 2004's April Fool's Day gag called for job applications for its new Copernicus research center located on the moon! (Wonder how many suckers fell for that?) In 2005, the company announced it was entering the beverage space with a drink called Google Gulp, which would make the drinker smarter. Not every April Fool's Day Announcement though, has been a joke! So those who thought that the 1 April, 2004 Google press release announcing 1 GB of mailbox space was a hoax were pleasantly surprised to see that G-mail was indeed as real as it gets. |
