Microsoft Helps India Fight Online Child Porn

Microsoft Inc has tied up with Interpol and the International Centre for Missing and Exploited Children and Interpol (ICMEC), to curb online child pornography in India. The trio is currently training officers in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on preventing the online crime and prosecuting miscreants in the country.

Rakshi Bakshi, director of legal and corporate affairs, Microsoft India revealed that the effort directed towards implementing Microsoft's internet safety initiatives and they are focused on protecting the public from the growing Internet threats such as malicious code, botnets, spam, online fraud, and other cyber attacks.

The course topics for the CBI officers range from malicious software, online attacks, advanced Windows/XP Forensics, Windows Vista Security Enhancements, and log analysis. The course also aims to educate the officers about specific methods used by predators to facilitate crimes against children, like the use of technology to look for victims through newsgroups, chat rooms, and email and global sharing of abusive images of children through the Net.

Yves Rolland, crime intelligence officer, trafficking in human beings sub-directorate, Interpol says that they will be able to track down IP addresses, with the help of cyber forensic tools, to find out who is using a certain site and where he is located, leading to a speedy arrest.

The ICMEC's Cyber Tip helpline has registered 350,000 reports of child pornography in India.
