The United Arab Emirates (UAE) tops the Arab world in the number of Internet users per thousand, while Bahrain ranks second in the use of cellular phone, WAM news agency reported Wednesday. A 2007-2008 human development report issued by the UN Development Program (UNDP) says the UAE tops all Arab countries in the Internet access, with 308 users per every 1000 people. Kuwait ranks second with 276 users per 1000 people, followed by Qatar with 269, and Bahrain with 213. Lebanon ranks fifth with 196 users per every 1000 people, while Oman ranks eighth with 111 users and Saudi Arabia at 11th position with 70 users. On the use of cellular phones, Bahrain tops the Arab world with 1030 subscribers per every 1000 people, followed by UAE with 1000 subscribers. Kuwait ranks third with 939 subscribers, followed by Qatar with 882 subscribers, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia and Oman trails with 575, 566 and 519 respectively. In landline telephones, Lebanon tops the Arab world with 277 telephones per 1000 people, followed by UAE with 273 telephones. Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia with 270, 253 201 and 164 subscribers respectively, while Oman ranks 12th with 103 subscribers per 1000 people. |
