Facebook slightly changes the name of its Camera app

| by Padmini Harchandrai | iOS

Facebook recently launched an app called Camera, which, as the name suggests, allows you to edit and upload pictures to the social network. The app is currently out for iOS only and has released an update, which changes the name of the app in your homescreen, albeit very slightly. When the app launched as simply "Camera", it provided for a little confusion because the name of the iPhone's native camera application is also "Camera". For this reason, through the update, the Facebook Camera app now appears as "Camera•". If this name seems a little odd to you, that's because it probably is. According to PCMag, a spokesperson from Facebook said, "To avoid any possible user confusion, Facebook Camera's screen name was updated to better distinguish it from the iOS Camera app." The statement, however, does not include a guide to the pronunciation of the new name for the application.

Facebook launched their Camera app late last month and the application essentially provided, in News Feed format, all the photos that your friends upload to the social network. It also allows you to upload multiple photos at one go and add filters to them in the style of Instagram. The launching of this app was quite confusing as it had followed Facebook's $1 billion acquisition of Instagram, which offered a very similar service. The big question at the time was how Facebook expected to bring Instagram users over to its own application.

The update also brought some quick fixes, for example, you no longer have to turn on your location settings, in order to use the app and upload photos. In fact, the update provides users with information on how exactly location services work within the app and ensures that the application works better when location services are left switched off. There are also a few bug fixes in the update, including those which caused one upload to result in multiple Timeline stories and display photos out of order. Do you use the Facebook Camera app? Do you know how to pronounce the name change? Let us know in the comments section below.
