Gmail app for iOS updated to v1.3

| by Anuradha Shetty | iOS

Earlier this week, Google updated the iOS app of its widely used e-mail service, Gmail, to version 1.3. In an official blog post, Google claims that the new version, which includes a host of changes, improves animation, scrolling and responsiveness on the iPhone and iPod touch. Some of the other improvements include many events in the app now being slightly faster and smoother. In its official post, Google adds that the buttons respond more quickly to presses, while scrolling is smoother. Also part of the improvisation is what Google refers to as a 'popularly requested feature' viz. when a user is viewing a picture attachment, he or she can now long press (touch and hold) to save it to their photo library.  The new version also brings with it some bug fixes.

Late in June this year, Google had updated its Gmail app for iOS users. The update brought to the table complete support for the Apple operating system’s Notification Center. Other additions included ‘Send-as’, a facility to send emails from alternate addresses and ‘Persistent login’, which means sessions will no longer undergo timeout and expire.

Google has been periodically releasing updates to the Gmail app. Earlier updates include ability to set a custom signature for your mobile messages and a vacation responder, both available through the gear icon at the top of the menu view. The company has also improved labels, with support for nested labels. Google has also added a feature that lets you pen up a canvas and scribble a message that will be attached to your e-mail. Scribbles support different colours, brush sizes, lines, erasers and spray paint. The app, however, does not support multiple accounts, as opposed to the app on Android.

Google rolled out the official Gmail app for the iOS in November last year. However, after some serious bugs were detected, the app was pulled out. Some of the features of the app include push notifications, the ability to attach a photo to an e-mail, speedier searches, Priority Inbox, mail organisation with archiving, labelling, starring and reporting as spam, as well as viewing labels without leaving the inbox.

The Gmail app is available for devices running iOS 4+. Gmail app for iOS is available to both iPhone and iPad users.
