Hitachi has announced that it has started to develop the MHZ2 series of 2.5" laptop HDDs, which will raise the capacity of these drives to 320 GB. They will be able to deliver transfer speeds of up to 300 MB per second as they operate on the SATA 2 interface and operate using the perpendicular method of storage. This new series of drives are designed for use in compact desktop PCs, notebook PCs, and consumer electronics products, such as HDD recorders. Furthermore these drives will have among the lowest levels of power consumption, operating at only 1.9 watts when reading or writing data. Sales of the new series will begin in February 2008. As laptops are now outselling desktops, they require more capacity and faster drives. As modern day OSs like Windows Vista require nearly 9 GB and the size of digital content grows, the current-day 160 GB just doesn’t cut it anymore. |
