HP in Racist Faux Pas

22 Dec, 2009, 5:22 pm IST | tech2 News Staff | Notebooks

Imagine buying a laptop from a reputed manufacturer and then realising that its face tracking webcam cannot track your face not because it's faulty but because you're black.

Well, you don't have to imagine that because it did happen to a gentleman in the US, who'd bought himself an HP laptop. He figured the face tracking webcam wasn't working but when his "white" friend came into the picture it "magically" worked. So he posted a video of this 'discovery' on YouTube for the world to see and I'm pretty sure this is one of HP's most embarrassing moments.

HP's been squeaky clean so far (no controversies, lawsuits etc) and they maintain that the technology they use is built on standard algorithms that measure the difference in intensity of contrast between the eyes and the upper cheek and nose. They believe that the camera might have difficulty “seeing” contrast in conditions where there is insufficient foreground lighting.

You too can watch the video here.
