Rupee fall compels Dell India to increase prices of some products

While Nikon India said that they may be compelled to increase prices of their products, due to the Rupee fall, Dell has already increased prices of some products. The steep fall of the Rupee has increased the input cost for PC makers across the world. Due to this fall in Rupee, coupled with the restricted supply of components due to floods in Thailand and Tsunami in Japan, the renowned PC maker has hiked prices of some laptops and desktops, but they haven't revealed the names of those products. "If the impact of rupee depreciation is 1-2 per cent, it is manageable for us. But if it is more than that, we are left with no choice but to pass it on to the consumers. The prices of our products is higher than it was last month," said Dell Executive Director and GM (Consumer and SMB), Mahesh Bhalla.

MAIT, the IT hardware body is also said to have approached the government over revising the valuation of contracts. MAIT President Alok Bharadwaj revealed that as they work on very thin margins, the members have no choice, but to pass on the burden to retail consumers and enterprises. "Indian market is not going well as we would like it to be. Main challenge is the overall economy... PC growth rate has also been impacted. If the government takes the right steps, we expect to see lot more happening in the sector," Bhalla said.

India, which has been one of the growth markets for Dell in the previous quarters, showed declining profit of nearly 33 percent in the February-April quarter of 2012. In order to boost the sales, the company is launching newer products in the Indian market. These new devices are aimed at students and professionals who are on-the-go, usually. There's the R Special Edition, along with the R series of laptops. The starting price of the former will be  51,146, while the latter will be priced at  39,990 onwards. These devices are fuelled by the latest third generation Intel Core processors and will run on Windows 7 Home Basic.
