Dolby to Release High-end LED Backlit LCDs

04 Dec, 2008, 2:16 pm IST | by Siddharth Bhatia | LCD

Everyone knows Dolby, the pioneers of surround sound. The company is now off on a visual tangent - they have previewed an LED-backlit LCD display system and an audio control system.

This is actually the outcome of Dolby buying a company called BrightSide Technologies Inc., that specializes in high-dynamic-range (HDR) image technology.

Conventional LCD panels have fluorescent backlight, meaning that brightness variations are limited in their range. The Dolby HDR (High Dynamic Range) system uses multiple locally modulated LED backlights to offer much more convincing brightness variations. Since this also allows color gradations to be more realistic, the result is a picture which, though has no higher resolution than conventional HD, appears to have much greater detail.

The other technology - temporarily called Dolby Volume - will settle in as an option in the new breed of AV receivers that are released. Meanwhile rumor has it that Harman Kardon and Arcam are already incorporating it in a couple of their new models. The main function of this feature is to control volume 'intelligently', using multiband EQ.
