While LED (Light Emitting Diode)-backlit monitors are taking some time to be adapted to the business side of things, a report from the IHS iSuppli Worldwide Monitor Market Tracker has stated that their adoption at the consumer end has become a fast increasing trend. As a result, vendors are increasing the number of LED backlit products, with 2012 touted to be a better year, in terms of LED monitor sales.
LED is currently placed at a higher price bracket owing to cost additions and feature differentials, along with the backlight price differential, as compared to the conventional light source technology that most monitors have i.e. the CCFL (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp). But they do have a significant number of advantages, the most important one being that they are highly energy efficient, with 30 to 50 percent less power consumption than conventional CCFL monitors.
LED backlit monitors will soon displace conventional ones
iSuppli has predicted that LED monitors will grow at a CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) of 81 percent between 2010 and 2015. That means the number of units to be shipped will increase from 9.1 million in 2010 to 176.7 million in 2015. However, they anticipate 5-6 months of pipeline issues as there may be a delay between production and consumer purchases. Also, vendors may face issues reimbursing the cost differentials at the street level as they work to phase out the older generation monitors.
The interesting part of this analysis is that, in spite of cost issues, LED monitors seem to have been accepted by consumers, which definitely indicate the end of the road for the older generation monitors. The entire report can be viewed on iSuppli. |
