Fedora Linux 17, dubbed as ‘Beefy Miracle’ has finally become official. The free and open source operating system has finally been announced and Robyn Bergeron, Fedora Project Leader, announced that, “(Fedora is) a comprehensive and robust operating system for all types of users. I am extremely proud of the Fedora 17 release”. Fedora 17 comes with more than 60 new features and projects like oVirt, JBoss Application Server 7 and improvements in OpenStack with additional support for latest releases of desktop environments. PC World’s Katherine Noyes had a chat with Bergeron who told her, “I think there is a greater emphasis on not just the under-the-hood and desktop features we normally focus on, but we're also starting to see a greater influx of other large open source projects as well. You'll see JBoss 7, which is not a simple feature. Another one is OpenStack--we've gone from dabbling in it to having the full force of the Essex release.”

This new release has something in store for everyone, including business users, Bergeron mentioned. “Say I'm a coffee shop owner,” she explained, before introducing automatic multi-seat. “What this enables is that even if you have just a single machine, you can have multiple people on multiple desktops, all from one machine.” Visitors to the shop could use guest PCs without investing in another computer. “When you compare Fedora 17 to another proprietary OS you might buy at a big box store, the feature parity is there,” Bergeron concluded. “This is a good time to come back and take another look at free and open source software.” The software can be downloaded on Fedora’s official site where the complete list of features are available for viewing. |
