Linux Mint 12 Lisa now available for download

A few days back, we talked about the popularity of Ubuntu Linux headed downwards and Linux Mint, another distribution based on it on the rise. Just yesterday, an update to the Linux Mint distribution was launched. The latest version, 12, called Lisa was made available for download yesterday. The distribution is based on Ubuntu. There are a whole bunch of features that have been added to the new distribution. Linux Mint 12 uses Gnome 3 and the MGSE (Mint Gnome Shell Extension), which enhance the interface a bit more than the standard Gnome UI. Users have the options to completely disable all the components from MGSE, if they want to.

Quickly gaining popularity

Some of the enhancements, apart from bug fixes and updates to other packages include new themes and background wallpapers. Linux Mint 12 also uses a new default search engine called DuckDuckGo. There’s also a unique bit of software called MATE, which allows usrs to run both Gnome 2 and Gnome 3 on the same installation. This is only available on the DVD version of the distribution, but those installing from the CD can choose to download it using the mint-meta-mate package.
