Mac App Store Opens for Business

| by Sriram Gurunathan | Mac OS

Just like they announced a couple of weeks ago, Apple have opened the Mac App Store up for business today, which will allow users to purchase and download apps for their Macintosh PCs in the same way they do at the App Store for iOS.

Let the money-grabbing begin!

To access the App Store, Mac users will have to upgrade to the latest version of Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.6) through a free update. The update can be downloaded either from the update tab in their OS, or from Apple’s website.

Once the download is complete, the App Store will appear as an icon on the dock right next to the Finder. Upon opening it up, people familiar with the iOS App Store will feel right at home as the Mac counterpart also features category-browsing. Anyway, purchasing apps is extremely simple as it can be done with just one click and entering your iTunes user ID and password. This will then begin the automated download and install process – including the addition of an icon on the dock.

While popular software vendors like Microsoft or Adobe aren’t on the app store yet – and we’re not sure if they ever will be – there’s plenty of stuff to check out. Let us know your impressions if you do.
