BSNL, the state-owned network provider has cut off services to Airtel and Vodafone in Punjab. This has lead to network outages in the state, as well as in the Panchkula area of Haryana. People living in the area will face disruption in mobile and landline calls. The disrupt is happening because BSNL claims that Vodafone and Airtel have outstanding bills for interconnectivity provision between mobile and fixed landline phones. Airtel seems to owe BSNL Rs. 5.97 crore and Vodafone owes BSNL Rs. 2.16 crore. These bills are for the period between April 2009 and August 2011. Airtel and Vodafone users in Punjab will face outage
Of course, the group that really suffers because of this outage is the end customer. The Cellular Operators Association, which is a lobby group of telecom operators said that BSNL went ahead and disconnected these services without any concern for customer needs. The group said that the amount claimed by BSNL at a pan-India level is erroneous, inflated and not in consonance with TRAI's IUC (interconnect user charges) regulations. What BSNL could have done is sent out a notice to customers with sufficient time provided that would allow them to make alternate arrangements for their phone needs. |
