Face Recognition in Cell Phones for Security

There's still some time before your phone scans your retina to authorize you, but NTT DoCoMo is getting closer. Their latest 3G FOMA handset series includes the N902iL, which comes with built-in face recognition to prevent someone else from using your phone.

To set it up, you need to let it take a few pictures of you and then it's ready to lock the phone down if anyone grabs it from you and tries to call some overseas chat line. Unfortunately, this is Japan-only, but since this is primarily a software-based function, it shouldn't be difficult to incorporate it in phones around this side of the century. It would be particularly useful in a country like India, where more phones are stolen every day than passwords and bank details.

By the time we get face recognition into our phones, Japan will probably have phones that prick your ear, take a blood sample, verify the DNA online and authorize you—all in a fraction of a second.

NTT DoCoMo also announced the P903i, which comes with an external module that you keep in your pocket, so if the phone gets separated from you, like in a cab, it will automatically disable all calling, making the phone useless.
