GPU Not The Way to Go With Mobiles, Tablets: Qualcomm

23 Jul, 2011, 1:05 pm IST | by Rossi Fernandes | Mobile phones

Qualcomm believes that the way to go ahead is with CPUs and not GPUs. This is obviously directed towards NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 platform. Qualcomm’s Director of Product  Management, Sy Choudhury in an interview with The Inquirer, said that GPUs aren’t responsible for the overall system performance, CPUs are. He said that chip designs should use GPUs to aid the CPU, but simply trying to use the GPU for all kinds of applications such as browsers won’t result in superior performance. He said that optimizations are also necessary. He said that GPUs don’t perform as well as they work by receiving small bits of data in parallel.

Choudhury also boasted that the Snapdragon platform with its optimizations is capable of running 720p Flash content within a browser better than what a Tegra 2 GPU powered device such as the Motorola Xoom can. He also expressed his concern that devices running the same OS and  processor don’t always give the same performance primarily because OEMs choose not to use all of the optimizations made by chip designers. Hardware optimizations are used but it’s not the case with software.
