Karnataka Govt. to Ban Cell Phones in Schools

After aerated drinks, the Karnataka government has proposed to ban the use of mobile phones in schools across the state.

Primary and Secondary Education Minister Basavaraj Horatti and Health and Family Welfare Minister R Ashok said a circular to this effect would be issued in a day or two. They also appealed to the parents to discourage the use of cell phones by children at home.

The ban would be applicable to government, private and aided educational institutions. The school authorities would be empowered to seize handsets, if children are found using them in schools.

The government says the move was prompted by a health department report that mobile usage by children below 16 could lead to memory and hearing loss.

All educational institutions right up to pre-university colleges would be asked to implement the ban, and it would also be implemented in schools affiliated to CBSE and ICSE.

Reasons for the ban

  • The government feels cell phones harm children’s health.
  • Mobile phones are a nuisance in schools.
  • Teachers have complained that students played with their phones, listened to music and received calls in classrooms.
