NAB and Intex Announce VISION, A Handset for the Visually Impaired

20 Apr, 2011, 5:33 pm IST | by Shayne Rana | Mobile phones

In an effort to better assist the handicapped community, Intex has developed a new mobile handset that’s designed to do just that. Their INTEX VISION mobile handset has been released and developed specifically for the visually impaired. The phone was recently unveiled by the National Association for the Blind (NAB) amongst its students and faculty. NAB is the largest non-government, voluntary organization in India.

The Dual SIM phone (GSM+GSM) features a large Braille keypad to facilitate recognition of digits. People, who are not conversant with Braille, could switch to the ‘Talking Keypad’ feature which speaks out (in English, no word on multiple language support) the number they have pressed. The phone also has a unique SOS feature which allows you to save four emergency numbers. By pressing the SOS button, a call gets automatically directed to the first emergency number.

“Blindness is a disability which could be overcome with training and guidance. The INTEX Vision phone is an ideal tool for the visually impaired people to satisfy their communication needs. It can play a very useful role in their integrated development” said Mr. Mohinder Kapur, President, National Association for the Blind.

Intex also states that the INTEX VISION will offer quite a bit of additional functionality like - a like wireless FM radio, audio player, expandable memory up to 2GB, torch light, auto call record, mobile tracker, dedicated one-touch key for locking the keypad, a phone and SMS memory of 1000 contacts and 250 messages respectively. For the safety of the users, the FM antenna has been housed in the panel below the phone to avoid its accidental contact with the eyes. The backlight has a soothing orange tone which does not affect the eyes and hence caters to those with a partially impaired vision.

The VISION is priced at Rs. 2,600 (MOP) which puts it in a very affordable range.
