Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, the world's biggest TV brand by revenue, said on Monday it sold 2.6 million TVs using light emitting diode (LED) backlight units in 2009, outperforming its earlier target. Samsung also confirmed an LED-backlight TV sales target for this year of 10 million units. Liquid crystal display (LCD) TV sets featuring LED are thinner, more power-efficient and provide better images than those lit by traditional cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFLs). Samsung has enjoyed an early lead in the market but faces deepening competition. As the price premium for LED-backlight models have fallen, Samsung plans to offer a broader lineup in 2010 to expand the market. Samsung said in September it aimed to sell at least 2 million LED TVs in 2009 and 10 million or more in 2010. Separately, Maeil Business Newspaper reported Samsung was targetting to produce 250 million mobile phones in 2010, up about 15 percent from 2009, citing industry sources, Samsung, the world's No. 2 mobile phone maker, said on Monday it had not set any targets for handsets this year yet. |
