Digilite introduces VIA VX900 chipset-based motherboard

| by Nachiket Mhatre | Motherboards

With mainstream desktop PCs these days drawing well over 300 watts at peak load, many users have resorted to co-opting notebooks and netbooks for general computing tasks that don't really require much polygon-crunching might. Such applications benefit from systems based on smaller form factors such as the ITX, which is targeted at those seeking low-cost, low-energy computing. If you are in the market for such configuration, the Digilite motherboard brand of Smartlink Network Systems Ltd. has launched a new motherboard DL-PV530A-ITX. It is priced at Rs. 3,900, and comes with a warranty of three years.

The motherboard incorporates the VIA VX900 chipset and features an inbuilt 1.8GHz dual-core processor. Designed to offer an energy-efficient computing experience, its VIA PV530 processor provides enough grunt for daily usage without drawing too much power. However, if you fancy extracting more juice from the processor, it supports VIA's OC DNA for overclockability. DL-PV530A-ITX is allows users the flexibility of deploying DDR2 or DDR3 RAM modules.

Its integrated VIA Chrome9 graphics chipset may not match the power of integrated graphics solutions from Intel or AMD, but it's good for decoding videos in H.264, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, WMV9, and DivX formats in 1080p. This is achieved thanks to what VIA dubs as the Chromotion Video Engine. Although the onboard GPU supports the DirectX 9.0 API, it's not well-suited for gaming at all.

This VIA VX900 chipset-equipped motherboard is suitable for very small form factor desktops focusing on low power consumption. The ability of the integrated graphics to play Full-HD content also makes it suitable for HTPC deployment.
