Gigabyte have released a new BIOS update that enables support for Hard-drives that sport a capacity higher than 2.2TB. The BIOS update is currently only available for P67 boards for the LGA 1155 socket (Sandy Bridge), but other motherboards will receive updates soon. Gigabyte likes it big The traditional Master Boot Record Partition Sector only supported drives of upto 2TB. What the BIOS update does is allow users to format drives and boot from them using the GUID Partition table, which supports partitions of upto 9.4ZB (!). This is done by enabling EFI/UEFI boot support. For now, only 64-bit Operating Systems support booting from such a hard drive but the 32-bit versions of Vista onwards allow PC owners to use these massive hard drives as storage alternatives. Check out the compatibility table below. Sorry, 32-bit XP users. You're out of luck. Gigabyte have stated other motherboards will soon receive a BIOS update, making them compatible with 2.2+TB hard drives too. So keep your @BIOS/Q-Flash utility ready. |
