| VIA Technologies has announced that it would now support the Trusted Platform Module. In a brief statement, VIA said it has validated TPMs from ST Microelectronics and BIOS software from AMI and Insyde Software but did not indicate which chipsets would support the TPMs. Both AMD and Intel support the Trusted Platform Module. It is geared to play a key role in the fight against identity theft. Many upcoming and newly released notebooks, including the Lenovo ThinkPads already include the chip, which stores a cryptographics key that can be used to lock down data in case the hardware is lost or stolen. Critics worry that the TPM module will be used by Microsoft's upcoming Vista OS as a digital-rights-management (DRM) tool. |
