Microsoft claims it has sold over 1 million units of its 30 GB MP3 player, Zune, launched nine months ago. President of Microsoft's Entertainment and Devices Division, Robbie Bach told the San Francisco Chronicle it has already passed the million mark, and Zune now has a 10 percent market share in the hard-disk-based music player category. However, Zune, which was touted to be the iPod killer has not lived up to the expectations, when considering the fact that Apple in Q4 of last year alone sold 14 million iPods. Bach also spoke about the much hyped iPhone by key competitor, Apple, saying it will be a very interesting product but it will have its trade-offs. He said that the product will be expensive but then again, it will attract its level of attention from Apple enthusiasts. He also added that the iPhone hasn't changed any of Microsoft’s fundamental approaches to that marketplace. Coming back to Zune, Bach seemed excited about the watermelon-colored Zune, expected to be a hit with kids. He pointed to further developments in Zune, which will allow users to perform more wireless functions and that Microsoft will "expand in that space, a little bit more from the social aspects of connecting people together, a little more than just a store." |
