NTT DoCoMo's Army Style Music Porter X

A few days back NTT DoCoMo was all over the gadget blogsphere for their army-style Music Porter X slider phone that runs on and downloads music from their 3G FOMA network. The highlights of the phone include music playback, 1 GB of memory, FM radio, a 2.8" 240x400 display showing upto 262,144 colors, Macromedia Flash based user interface that mimics army walky talkies and the like. The downside of this phone is a VGA camera in this n-megapixel day and age, no memory card slot and of course, the fact that you can't buy it and use it here in India. The thing that interests me more about this phone is that apart from MP3 and AAC, it supports Sony's ATRAC3Plus format as well, which in my opinion, is perfect for hand held devices because it sounds better at lower bit rates, translating to lower file sizes, uses lower battery power to decode meaning your device gets more battery life. I can vouch for this as I've been using a Sony NW-HD1 for quite some time now. Sony created the ATRAC format, and they themselves aren't using it in their phones. Instead, they're just spray painting their existing phones and giving them different model numbers. Wouldn't it make sense to put ATRAC3Plus into Sony-Ericsson Walkman phones? ntt-docomo-music-porter-x_t.jpg
