Intel To Allow Use of Other Chipsets With Atom

In what appears to be a good damage control exercise , Intel has come out and said that it would not stop OEMs from offering its Atom CPU with GPUs manufactured by other companies, like Nvidia’s recently announced Ion platform. This is significant because normally the Atom is always accompanied, by Intel’s own 945 chipset with integrated graphics. This is an old aging chipset that has been recycled and does not really offer the best VFM. This opens up new possibilities for netbook manufacturers. Nvidia’s Ion has been recently adapted by Apple for an upcoming range of products and this shows its strengths. Apple is usually quite picky, with the kind of hardware it bundles within its closed environment. Since there is no restriction anymore from Intel, major netbook manufacturers can bundle the new chipset with the Atom processor and will be able to offer a far richer graphical experience to their customers on a more modern platform. This also quells the war between Intel and Nvidia, which has reached a flashpoint over the last year or so. Both the companies have been at each other’s throats, as Intel announced its plans to enter the GPU market and Nvidia has started moving actively in the application processing market. |
