Intel collaborates with Asus and RCom for affordable computing

While broadband Internet has spread far and wide in our country, there’s a sizable population, which is still in the dark. In order to reduce that, Intel has teamed up with Reliance Communications (RCom) and Asus to accelerate broadband penetration. They hope to accomplish this by offering affordable computing devices, which is where the Asus X101 Meego powered netbook comes in. Asus has slashed the price to Rs. 9,999, which is great for first time buyers, students or people on the go.

Reliance, on the other hand will be offering special discounts on their Netconnect 3G modems with every purchase of the netbook. This way, you can have an Internet-ready computer on the move for about 15K. The Asus X101 is no slouch given its thin profile. The incredibly slim netbook packs in Intel Atom N435 processor, 1GB of RAM, 2.5-inch 8GB SSD with 2GB Dropbox web storage. The netbook also features built-in educational applications. Even though it’s not Windows, you get your social networking fix through apps for Facebook, Twitter and many others.

Other than its intended purpose, we feel the X101 would make for an ideal travel companion. It may have low internal storage, but the way we look at it, you can have all your important documents in the cloud whereas the rest of your data can be stored on a portable hard drive.
