Microsoft to Charge Acer and Asustek Royalties For Using Android in Netbooks

Microsoft, in order to prevent Asustek and Acer from using Android or Chrome OS for their netbooks and tablets, will charge royalties to the two companies if they do, according to Taiwan based makers. Microsoft will charge fees of at least $10-15 per device for the use of its patents for email, multimedia and other services should the two companies use the Google owned OSes. HTC is the only Taiwanese company to have licenses to Microsoft's patents which leaves Acer and Asustek as targets for Microsoft's royalty charges. This move is strategic so the two companies do not use Android or Chrome OS for their netbooks and tablets. SOURCE: Digitimes |
