Intel 45nm UMPC Processor on Its Way

23 Mar, 2007, 6:00 pm IST | by Gaurav Seth | Notebooks

One of the most important concerns while developing a mobile platform is battery life. With UMPCs (Ultra Mobile PCs), battery life has been a major issue since processors used are the ones originally meant for laptops.

Currently the processors used in UMPCs range from the 900MHz Celeron M ULV used in the Asus R2H and the Samsung Q1 to the 1.2 GHz Core Solo U1400 processor used in the Sony VAIO UX. The problem here is that these laptop processors are coupled with a smaller battery pack in UMPCs as compared to laptops.
Interestingly Intel is currently developing a mobile processor aimed for the UMPC market. This processor will be one of the six new processors manufactured on Intel's 45 nanometer manufacturing process.

According the Intel CEO Paul Otellini, the first UltraMobile devices will be seen in the latter part of the year. It is not sure as to which OEM will be using the processor first, but the likely candidates will most probably be Samsung, Sony, Asus, and TabletKiosk.
