'Hot Coffee' Issue Resolved

23 Jul, 2006, 1:00 pm IST | by Jayesh Mansukhani | PC

Beleaguered game maker Rockstar games and Take-two Interactive finally managed to get past the 'Hot Coffee' issue that has plagued it since the last year. The Hot Coffee mod was a code modification that had unlocked adult content in Rockstar's best selling GTA: San Andreas. A very relieved sounding CEO Paul Eibele of Take-Two Interactive announced that the Federal Trade Commission's (FTC) inquiry was formally closed. Following the 30-day period for public comment, the FTC has unanimously approved the Consent Order and Agreement with Take-Two and its wholly-owned publishing label Rockstar Games. According to the publisher, "All outstanding matters pending before the FTC have been settled and no penalties or fines have been assessed. Among other things, the Consent Order provides that the Company shall not misrepresent a video game's ratings or content descriptors and that the Company shall implement a system to ensure that all game content is reviewed in connection with submissions to ratings authorities." Rockstar has not gotten off lightly though. The change in ratings and the controversy lead to the game being taken off shelves resulting in a loss of 25 million dollars.
