The country's telecom watchdog Friday recommended that the content of value-added services (VAS) should be subject to regulation and should comply with prevailing copyright laws, including digital management rights. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), in its recommendations on 'Growth of Value-Added Services and Regulatory Issues' said the VAS market offers great scope of growth for telecom access service and content providers. The revenue from VAS is expected to cross Rs. 250 billion (Rs. 25,000 crore) by 2009-10, which is more than 30 percent of the revenue the telecom access service providers are expected to generate in the next five-seven years, TRAI said. The regulator also said no separate category of license or registration is required for the VAS providers. Also, there is need for uniformity in various licenses and amendment of access service license agreements to pave way for the growth of VAS, particularly in mobile 2G/3G and next generation network segments. |
