Will Consumers Choose the Netbook or the Notebook in 2009?

Here's a million dollar question? What will be the consumer choice this year - a thin, light, super-fast $2k MacBook Air or a thin, light, ultra-portable, $500 HP Mini 1000 Netbook? If the choice of most folks, rests on a Netbook then ultra portables would need to do some serious rethinking on its pricing. Considering that 3G games become a standard option it is likely that most people would opt for Netbooks. The uncertainty or perplexity that will confound most people would be a choice in terms of specifications. What would be more exciting to them? An ultra-light notebook complete with a Core 2 Duo processor, 64GB solid-state drive, and 12-inch (or 13-inch) LED screen with a price tag of at least $1.8K? Or perhaps a Netbook with an Atom processor, 16GB solid-state drive, and a 10-inch screen for approximately $400-$550? The most important factors of differentiation between the notebook and the Netbook will be the dimensions and the weight of the laptops. Since both categories of laptops are small and light, the one area where Netbooks might become disruptive would be the price factor. Up to now, buyers have had to pay a huge premium for the small size and thinness. With regards to the Netbook, price may not become a factor for its size and thinness. Naturally, the design and internals of both notebooks and Netbooks are certainly dissimilar, but how unlike are they, to warrant such a differential in price? Consumers will finally determine the destiny of the Netbook - although it continues to be debatable whether PC suppliers will really drive Netbooks aggressively to customers if Netbooks start eating into laptop sales. It is likely that AMD or Via Technologies would aggressively start promoting their newest chip that is - AMD's Yukon and Via's Nano for sleek, upscale Netbook-like designs. |
