Howard Stringer Backs Sony's Response Time After Outage

20 May, 2011, 12:37 pm IST | by Aaron Almeida | PlayStation 3

With the PlayStation and Qriocity services out for nearly month, many users were left frustrated by the downtime. The network was down for a week before Sony responded and this left most of the 77 million subscribers clueless regarding the outage of the network.

Sony has since continuously given updates regarding the outage and has continuously requested for patience from the users of the service in an apologetic manner. But going by a report from news agency Reuters, Sony’s CEO Sir Howard Stringer has defended the way the company has handled the attacks hereby contradicting all of the apologies issued by the company over the past month.

Sony CEO defends company's response time regarding outage

According to the report, Sony’s CEO Howard Stringer said, “This was an unprecedented situation. Most of these breaches go unreported by companies. Forty-three percent notify victims within a month. We reported in a week. You're telling me my week wasn't fast enough?"

This backlash came after a string of criticisms were directed at the company from the public, media as well as governments. Sony’s Kazuo Hirai and Patrick Seybold have continuously updated the public regarding the outage; however Howard Stringer has not been as forthcoming as them regarding the PSN downtime.

Sony was still accessing the financial damage of the outage. He said that there is a charge for the system being down and a charge for identity theft insurance. He went on to say that the charges mount up, but they don't add up to a number that they could quantify just yet.

An expert estimated the cost for the PSN outage could go up to as much as $2 billion.
