PSN Outage a 'Hiccup' in Online Strategy

18 May, 2011, 9:40 am IST | by Aaron Almeida | PlayStation 3

The PlayStation Network started last weekend, and in a call with several media outlets, Sony’s CEO Howard Stringer and Executive Deputy President Kazuo Hirai said they still do not know who was responsible for the attacks on Sony’s online services. The attack affected more than 100 million users of the PlayStation and Qriocity services resulting in data theft of users' personal account details.

And now it is Sony Online Entertainment that has been attacked

No system is 100 percent safe!

In the call to reporters, Stringer said that this was a hiccup in the road to a network future. He says that it is an escalating competition between good and bad and that these are the new rules of cyberspace. When questioned about why it took Sony a week to inform their users regarding the outage he countered it saying that there was no precedent of it in people’s experience and that most reports now seem to indicate that they acted very quickly and very responsibly.

Speaking along with Stringer, Deputy President Kazuo Hirai said that nobody’s system is 100 percent secure and safe and that this requires constant vigilance and monitoring.

Stringer went on to say that cyber theft is going on between governments and that everyone recognizes the defense agencies and security agencies around the world have very sophisticated hackers. He says if you train your best minds to hack sophisticated nuclear entities around the world, you're going to get some brilliant people, and when they're unemployed they will turn to other endeavors.
