Sony has announced on the PlayStation blog that the classic ICO and Shadow of the Colossus HD, and Demon's Souls will be headlining the Instant Games Collection for PlayStation Plus subscribers in June.
Both ICO and Shadow of the Colossus are games that gamers often point to when it comes to discussions of games as an art form. Developed by Team ICO, ICO is an action-adventure game designed around the classic "boy meets girl" concept. The protagonist of ICO is a young boy with horns on his head. He is locked in a coffin by warriors in his village because the horns are considered a bad omen. He escapes by chance, and while exploring his prison, encounters Yorda – a young princess who speaks a strange language.
The main aim of the game is to escape the castle with Yorda. While she is physically weak, locked doors in the castle open when she gets close enough. Her presence is also required in some gameplay scenarios such as puzzles.
Shadow of the Colossus is widely considered to be one of the best games ever created
Shadow of the Colossus was the second game created by the team behind ICO. It is meant to be a prequel to ICO but with a largely minimalistic and unexplained story. The player steps into the shoes of Wander, who enters a forbidden land on horseback. His aim is to revive a girl, Mono. To do this, Wander has to kill sixteen colossi living in the land.
The gameplay is divided into two parts – finding the colossi by exploration and fighting the colossi. Finding the colossi is achieved by following the reflection of sunlight on Wander's sword. No combat happens during these parts of the game and it is mostly about exploration. Fighting the colossi is where it gets tricky. As the name might imply, colossi are huge and a lot of time is spent trying to hang on for dear life as the colossi try to shake you off their bodies.
In Demon’s Souls, you play a lone warrior as he travels across Boletaria in an attempt to stop the ancient evil that is slowly consuming the place. Along the way, you also save souls and bring them back to a place called The Nexus, which also acts as a hub where you can level up and buy and upgrade equipment. The game is notorious for its difficulty and the only way to beat the game is to go through the levels slowly and to assess every situation before getting into fights.
