Sony has been pretty quiet throughout last week about what situations have transpired regarding the PlayStation Network and Qriocity service outage. It seems that not only were PSN customers kept unaware, but game makers as well were left as clueless. According to a letter leaked to a gaming blog, Industry Gamers, Sony has shed a little more light on the outage. The letter does not divulge much more information than what was given to customers and mostly goes along the same lines. Sony reveals more details regarding ongoing outage
In the letter, Sony’s Vice President of Publisher Relations revealed that on the 19th of April several PlayStation Network servers rebooted themselves and that unplanned as well as unusual activity was taking place. This immediately triggered a response from Sony. He goes on to say that the unplanned activity was initially believed to be limited to four servers and upon further investigation into the breach, it was discovered that six more servers were affected. The final new piece of information was that the forensic teams investigating the outage were able to confirm that intruders had used very sophisticated and aggressive techniques to obtain unauthorized access. The intruders hid their presence from system administrators and escalated privileges inside the servers. The intruders also deleted log files in order to hide the extent of their work and activity within the network.
The rest of the letter has information that has already been provided by Sony to the PSN and Qriocity services users.
