Sony Takes PSN Password Websites Offline

Just a few days after Sony’s phased restoration of the PlayStation Network process began, the company took down a website which allows users to reset their passwords. A new breach was discovered which allows hackers to alter users’ passwords by using the data that was stolen during the attacks on the services that occurred last month.

Sony password reset website taken offline

The breach was first reported by gaming website Nyleveia. They blogged that even though the PSN is back online, user data may still not be safe. This problem does not affect those users who try to reset their passwords via their PS3 or PSP consoles.

Commenting on the recent exploit, Sony’s Senior Director of Corporate Communications & Social Media said that they temporarily took down the PSN and Qriocity password reset page and that there was no hack involved. In the process of resetting passwords there was a URL exploit that they have subsequently fixed. He went on to add that consumers who have not reset their passwords are encouraged to do so directly through their PS3. Or else they could do it through the website as soon as it was back up.

While the PlayStation Network is running smoothly as of right now, the password reset website still remains unavailable.
