Sony's Patrick Seybold Sheds More Light On The PSN Outage

After the PSN outage running into its second week, Sony’s Patrick Seybold, Senior Director, Corporate Communications & Social Media posted an updated question and answer style update regarding the status of the saga through the PlayStation Blog. This happens to be the first in-depth update by Sony since the outage started.

According to TechCrunch, Sony explained that they detected the breach on the 19th of April but that they were not sure of the depth of the intrusion till a little later.

Among various questions the key areas addressed were the following:

  • Credit card information was encrypted however other personal data like name, address, etc. was not.
  • Credit card security codes (CVC or CSC number) are not saved on their system so it is not tampered with.
  • Working with law enforcement as this is recognized as a malicious criminal attack.
  • Some services to be running within a week.
  • Emails are being sent to notify users regarding the situation.
  • A mandatory system update will be released when the PSN is back up and all users will be required to change their passwords.
