Bose Releases SoundDock Upgrade in UK

16 Oct, 2007, 11:46 am IST | by Siddharth Bhatia | PMPs

Bose has introduced a new portable digital music system dubbed the SoundDock, a speaker system for iPod, in an even slimmer profile than Bose’s original SoundDock system. The company has combined its waveguide speaker technology with neodymium transducers and, in a bid to optimize space, the waveguide’s exit also serves as the system’s carry handle.

The new transducers were developed specifically for the SoundDock portable digital music system, and use neodymium iron boron magnets to deliver what Bose claims is around ten times the magnetic energy density of conventional magnets.

A rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery is claimed to run the system for three hours at full volume, or for much longer periods at more moderate listening levels. Battery life is apparently further extended with an electronics package whereby a switching power supply, switching power amplifiers and low-power micro-processors have all been optimized for efficiency.

Even the digital signal processing, according to Bose, has been specially configured to ensure audio accuracy and consistency while conserving energy.

The system is charged using the included AC power supply, and will charge an iPod either when operating on battery power or when plugged into a wall socket. A new infrared remote operates the iPod and system, and now features playlist control. Touch-sensitive volume buttons are located on the unit itself.

The SoundDock Portable system works seamlessly with most iPod models, including Nano, Mini and Video iPod. It will be available from October 2007 in hi-gloss white or black at a price of around £279.
