December Release for Microsoft's iPod Killer

07 Jul, 2006, 2:30 pm IST | by Priyanka Pradhan | PMPs

The much awaited and rumored iPod killer from Microsoft is due to be launched by December this year as told to The New York Times. Although details of the handheld MP3 music/video player have not been divulged yet, it is certain that the device will offer Wi-fi that will allow users to download music without being connected to a computer. Microsoft is reportedly in talks with major record labels and television networks on deals that would allow it to sell music and video content online through a service, like Apple's iTunes Music Store. Together with ‘Urge', the music download service in partnership with MTV, it is set to give stiff competition to the well established iPod- iTunes pairing. Another interesting fact is that Microsft's DRM can be licensed by anyone and will not be guarded like Apple's controversial Fairplay. This means, it may keep both, the consumers and the government agencies happy. But, we'll just have to wait to see if the unnamed iPod killer works its magic on the iPod fan brigade.
