Sony has been known to creating their own proprietary formats for a very long time. One of these were MiniDiscs, which were created in the early 90s and used in MiniDisc players. It’s been close to two decades now. According to Nikkei, Sony has taken a decision to stop producing MiniDisc players, come September. Manufactured products would still be available in stores till stocks. Sony will continue making MiniDiscs, though. MiniDiscs were cartridges the size of 3.5-inch floppy discs with an optical disc in them, just like CDs. They had the capacity to store between 74 and 80 minutes of music on them.
End of an era
Sony stopped product of their Walkman players, last year. It’s hard to see why anyone would continue buying MiniDisc players in this age. In the early years, they were ahead of their time and offered great performance and reliability as compared to cassettes and tapes. MiniDiscs were most popular in Japan, more than any other country in the world. Sony’s latest popular and widely accepted media is Blu-ray, which is used in everything from gaming consoles to PCs to Blu-ray supported players. |
