After yesterday's news that the Flip cam software, Flip Share got a major update, Cisco announced that it's discontinuing the Flip Camera. They announced that they're exiting aspects of their consumer business, including close down its Flip business. It will continue, however, to support FlipShare customers and partners with a transition plan. Cisco acquired the Flip maker, Pure Digital back in 2009 with the view to make a Wifi enabled Flip camera. However, that plan never actually materialized. No more Ultra HD. Or even Mino HD.
The Flip was clearly a step in the evolution of user generated videos, providing high definition capability at a low price and being able to share and upload videos relatively easily. Now however, smartphones can do what the Flip camera does, and even better, with features like Touch Focus and in some cases, both front and back cameras. Smartphones also allow easier access to uploading videos on the web with data connections and edit software built into the devices themselves. So the death of Flip was inevitable. May it rest in peace. |
