Google I/O 2011: Let Android @ Home Control your Home

Ever wanted your phone to control electrical appliances in your home? If the answer is yes, the next bit of news will make you one happy bunny.

Step right up and get it for free...

Do you want the lights on or off?

Announced at today’s Google’s I/O event, ‘Android @ Home’ sounds like a techie’s dream come true.  If all goes to plan, Google would want to turn your home into one singular device. Android @ Home consists of a series of open source libraries which will allow developers to create custom automation apps for the Android platform.

During the event, Google showed off a new Android device called Project Tungsten. It is essentially a home theatre system (which looked like a little glowing hub) connected to several speakers. Google then, used an Android tablet, too and then proceeded to control the home theater system. The device was also able to detect the CDs via the NFC tags in the CD case and then add them to the library.

Don’t expect to get this in stores starting tomorrow - Google has said that it is currently working with several industry leaders in order to make ‘Android @ Home’ compatible appliances and devices which will show up by the end of the year.
