IDF 2011: Intel shows off disaster recovery solution

The Intel Developer Forum (IDF) is on and there are a lot of cool things to be seen. One of the more unique displays that Intel has, is their solar powered web server. Trusted Reviews was present at the Day Zero event that seems to be focused on disaster recovery. The server is based on the low-power Atom processor. It’s more than just a power-efficient hardware. There were sensors, the size of tennis balls that can be thrown into a damaged building in case of a disaster. These sensors can be used to detect smoke and other harmful chemicals without having to send in humans and risking their lives. These sensors have a battery built into them that can last a good 45 minutes.

The server they showed off had a solar panel that could supply enough power to run an Atom server complete with Wi-Fi capability, which could theoritically be connected to the internet using a 3G connection via a phone. Intel emphasised on the the losses incurred by companies after disasters such as earthquake, floods and tornadoes strike. They also said that 57 percent of the smaller setups had no backup plan to recover from such disasters.
