World IT Show 2012 starts today in Seoul

| by Rossi Fernandes | Science and Technology

Tech2 is here at the COEX Exhibition hall in the centre of Seoul for the World IT Expo 2012, where a whole bunch of companies are present showing off some of their coolest products. The international technology press, along with the local media are present for the event and we were invited to be a part of it. A press event was held specifically for this reason at COEX Exhibition hall late last evening to showcase as a preview to what’s in store today. This event started at 6 in the evening and went right until 8pm.

LG’s new OLED TV was one of the products  to catch most eyes and was constantly swarmed by the media and it’s looking pretty impressive. In a few words, it’s way sleeker than most of the LED backlit TVs today - the viewing angles are brilliant and so is the contrast ratio. We hope to take a closer look when the main event kicks off tomorrow. Samsung surprisingly wasn’t present at this inaugural event, which is kind of disappointing, considering they recently announced their flagship Galaxy S III smartphone. We were hoping to get a glimpse of the device, before it made its way to the market, later this month.

There were some other interesting prototypes and technology demonstrations as well. For example, there was an army of toy robots that danced to music and a much larger robot that mimicked the motion done by a human, done on a smaller robot; think of the movie Avatar or the robot gunner in The Matrix Revolutions movie. There were some interesting, but somewhat niche products meant for network security monitoring, for example. Napatech was one such company present showing off their line of network cards solutions that could do real time analysis of every single bit of information that passes through it.

Besides the big names, such as  LG, there were some other app developers as well. Ensight was one of the interesting ones, offering online music streaming apps for iOS devices as well as the Mac. What attracted us was its very classical user interface and a database of 50,000+ music stations. An Android version is on its way soon and the developers talked to us, telling us about a possible shift to HTML5, sometime in the future. Ensight’s app is expected to be bundled along with a major phone release sometime in the future.

Well, that’s the quick preview of the show. We’ll be putting a larger, more detailed coverage of the show later.
